Dish soap is more than just a cleaning product. It can be used for many other purposes, including fun activities with your kids. Here are seven of our favorite uses for dish soap.
- Shine up your jewelry. To shine up your jewelry, you can use a little dish soap and some seltzer water. To gently scrub jewelry that is particularly grimy, you can simply drop it in the mixture for five minutes.
- Oil stains can be removed from concrete floors. You can cover the stain by applying baking soda and then dish soap. Let it sit for several hours before you scrub the area with a stiff-bristled scrub brush.
- Keep insects away from your plants. Make a highly effective plant spray for both indoor and outdoor plants with dish soap. Combine 1 cup of sunflower oil or safflower oil with 1 cup water and 2 tablespoons dish soap in a spray container. TIP: Test your spray on a small area of the plant to ensure it is safe. Dish soap spray can be used on most plants.
- Clean delicate fabrics of oil and grease Use hot water and dish soap to remove oil and grease stains on delicate silk and wool fabrics. To remove oil and grease stains from delicate wool or silk fabrics, use 1 tablespoon of soap to 1 gallon hot water. Rub the stain with warm water and submerge the garment.
- Camping essential. A small container of dish soap is a must-have for camping. It can be used to clean your campsite, as well as personal grooming. Dish soap is gentle enough to be used as a substitute for shampoo or body wash in times of emergency.
- Make bubbles. You need a break from cleaning? Make super bubbles! This is a great activity for kids. Mix 1 cup dish soap with 6 cups (preferably distilled). To avoid bubbles, stir carefully. Stir in 1/4 cup corn syrup, and then stir. Cover the container with a lid and allow it to sit overnight. This will produce stronger bubbles.
- Get rid of stickers without leaving behind a sticky residue. Dish soap can be used to clean up stickers and residue. Let the sticker dry for five minutes before covering it with dish soap. You should be able to slide the sticker off. However, you can use hot water and a scrub brush for stubborn stickers.
